Use a Shopping Guide to help you find healthy food at markets, stores and mail order.

When I was working at changing my eating habits, I depended on the Shopping Guide put out by the Weston A. Price Foundation. Now that I am a Chapter Leader for the non-profit foundation, I make up a list of food sources for my local area in Nelson, BC Canada. Theses Guides make it so much easier to find healthy food. You don't have to spend all your time researching food ingredients and calling up food providers to be sure they have good food.

I encourage everyone to first try and get most of their food from local farmers who are growing produce in healthy soil without chemicals and artificial fertilizers. You should also seek out farmers that raise their animals on organic pastures. It's best to find the bulk of your food like eggs, dairy, meat, fruit and vegetables this way. I also challenge you to try and grow a little of your own food. The rest of your food can be purchased from grocery stores and on-line.

Another guide that can be helpful is The Eat Well Guide. Eat Well Guide is a free online directory for anyone in search of fresh, locally grown and sustainably produced food in the United States and Canada.

The Guide's thousands of listings include family farms, restaurants, farmers' markets, grocery stores, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs, U-pick orchards and more. Users can search by location, keyword, category or product to find good food, download customized guides, or plan a trip with the innovative mapping tool, Eat Well Everywhere.

I have compiled lists of products that I recommend and can be ordered on-line.

    You will find products like:

-Cultures like Kefir and sourdough starters

    -Healthy fats and oils

-Lightly processed meats (beef, bison, turkey)

    -Organic Grains and Legumes

    -Nuts and Seeds

    -Condiments

    -Salt and spices

    -Beverages

    -Sweeteners, preserves, and baking chocolate

    -Snack foods, cookies and bars
